Device cannot connect to server

Overview

There are many possible reasons for a failed connection between the mobile device and the server.  Step through the possible issues below to resolve server connection problems.

Resolution

  1. Confirm that your mobile device can access the internet by testing with Internet Explorer.  If it cannot, you can step through the device setup (Windows Mobile 6.1) (Windows Mobile 6.5) or possibly troubleshoot your wireless coverage.
  2. Make sure the OzLINK Mobile Server is running on your computer.  If it isn't running, start it.  Keep in mind that the Mobile Server will not work if your computer has been logged off or has gone to sleep.
  3. Make sure the settings screen for OzLINK Mobile Server is closed.  Devices cannot connect to the server when the settings window is open.
  4. Check the IP in the bottom left corner of the OzLINK Mobile Server window.  If the IP does not seem valid, configure the server IP in server setup.
  5. Confirm that the IP in the mobile device setup matches the server IP from step 3.  To change the IP, see: Setting up OzLINK on your mobile device.
  6. Confirm that the port number on each mobile device matches the port number in the OzLINK Mobile Server setup.  To change the port, see:  Setting up OzLINK on your mobile device.
  7. Confirm that your network card and your connection are set to 'work.'  For details see: Device Setup (Windows Mobile 6.1) (Windows Mobile 6.5)
  8. Make sure every firewall between your device and your server (including firewalls installed on your server and on intermediate network devices) has allowed OzLINK traffic to pass through.  You can determine if the firewall is an issue by temporarily disabling all firewalls and trying your connection again.  Keep in mind that the basic firewall that comes with all Windows computers is turned on by default, and that it often blocks OzLINK traffic.  Your IT staff will likely have to do this for you.
  9. Try connecting to a shared folder on your server from the mobile device.  For details see: Device Setup (Windows Mobile 6.1) (Windows Mobile 6.5)
  10. Some wireless devices can put their wireless network cards to sleep to conserve battery power.  The cards will occasionally get stuck in this sleeping state if they haven't been used for a long time.  On the device, disable and then re-enable the wireless network card to force it to wake up.  The process varies based on the device, so please refer to your device documentation to do this.
  11. If you can connect to a shared drive on the server, have disabled all firewalls on your network, and have tried the other steps above but are still having trouble, contact Oz Development for additional help.
